Rusty Mali

In 2012 the Melbourne Zoo celebrated its 150th year at Royal Park.

To celebrate the occasion 50 fiberglass replicas of Mali the baby Asian Elephant were been produced. Over 170 artists applied to decorate the sculptures. I was fortunate enough to have my submission, Rusty Mali, selected by my sponsor Cookers Bulk Oil System.

Rusty Mali was created opver a 2 month period in my tiny workshop. All kinds of recycled metals and objects were welded together. Sheet metal, chain, saw blades, tools and mesh are just some of the many items used to create the sculpture. .

In August and September 2012 all 50 Mali sculptures will be exhibited throughout the city, Rusty Mali was located in Chinatown for the period. The Mali sculptures were then moved to the Zoo for the month long birthday celebrations.

In late October 2012 49 of the 50 Mali sculptures were sold at Auction raising valuable funds for the zoo's enviromental programs.
